“Mommy, will you check my hair for ticks?”
This request came as we stood in line to get our food. Nevermind that tick season had passed. Nevermind that he’d had a bath the evening before. He wanted me to run my fingers through his hair, ruffling it all on end.
But it wasn’t actually a nasty little creature he was wanting me to look for, he was wanting me to reach out and touch him. The ruffling of his hair is one of the touches that communicates love to my rapidly growing boy.
But our children don’t always come right out and tell us when their hearts are longing for a physical communication of love. Instead, we must reach out to touch them and show our affection for them when they don’t request it.
Reach out to give a good morning hug.
Reach out to kiss an owie.
Reach out to tickle a tummy.
Reach out to rub a back.
Reach out to tousle the hair.
Reach out to massage a foot.
Reach out to pat a shoulder.
Reach out to touch.
Reach out to cultivate a heart connection through physical touch.
