Don’t Shy Away from Deep Questions

This post is part of a series of 31 Day to Cultivating Heart Connections with Your Child as part of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Challenge.

What is it about bedtime that makes a child’s mind come alive?

Deep questions bubble out.

Why did God make mosquitos?

Why did so and so make bad choices?

What is air?

How do airplanes stay in the air?

How does water turn white when it is snow?

It never fails, just when I am looking forward to a quick easy bedtime, one child will start asking questions and trigger a barrage of questions from the rest of the troop. The selfish part of me that longs for the peace and quiet that comes after their eyelids finally close for the night wants to give quick “I don’t know.” Or even to say, “We can talk about that tomorrow,” with the hope that they forget their question by then.

Yes, getting the kiddos tucked into bed so I can finish my to-do list or watch a movie with my husband sounds much more attractive than answering questions that make my tired brain work.

Yes, the questions can be brushed off or the topic of conversation changed.

But…

What will we miss if we shy away from the deep talks our children offer to have?

But these deep questions are a gift.

The deep questions our children ask give us insight into the deepest ponderings of their hearts.

These deep questions provide perfect opportunities to cultivate heart connections if we are willing to engage in the deep talks about their wonders, doubts, hopes, and dreams.
