Meet Them When They Are Scared

This post is part of a series of 31 Day to Cultivating Heart Connections with Your Child as part of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Challenge.

Clambering over rocks as he makes his way up the trail. Arms out balancing he strikes a victory pose before continuing.

From this picture, he looks confident and daring rather than scared.

What the picture doesn’t show is this same little boy’s face buried in my shoulder because he didn’t want to get out of sight of the car.

What the picture doesn’t show is me acknowledging his fear, wiping his tears, and pep talking to him.

What the picture doesn’t show is this same little boy strapped on his daddy’s back because he was too afraid to walk down the trail on his own two feet.

What the picture doesn’t show is the high fives when he decided he would be brave enough to try.

This picture is a victory picture—a picture of what happens when we meet our children when they are scared, come alongside them, and encourage them.

When we meet our children when they are scared, we step into their world and peak into their hearts.

When we meet our children when they are scared, they often give us the opportunity to speak truth to their fears and to help them overcome those fears.

When we meet our children when they are scare, we have the privilege of pointing them to the God who is always with them, watches over them, and knows what the future holds.

We cultivate heart connections with our children when we meet them right where they are and love them through the times they feel scared.
