Meet Their Needs

This post is part of a series of 31 Day to Cultivating Heart Connections with Your Child as part of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Challenge.

As mothers, we spend hours upon hours meeting the physical needs of our children. We prep the meals, wash the clothes, give the baths, attend the appointments, and on and on.

But…

Are we taking the time needed to meet their emotional needs?

Connection spills out of emotion; therefore, to cultivate connection we must take care of the emotional part of the relationship equation.

Meeting our children’s emotional needs means making sure they know they are accepted for who they are, respected as an individual person, belong in the family, matter to us, and have a sense of security.

How do we do that?

By cooking favorite dishes to say, “I know you and your preferences matter.”

By rising in the middle of the night to hold a scared little one.

By pausing the to-do list to read the book.

By saying “I love you, and because I love you, I am not going to allow you to do that.”

By saying “Yes” to tickle wars, a trip to the park, or a special breakfast.

By answering the thousandth question their God-given curiosity dreams up.

By silently holding them as they work through their own difficult emotions.

By being present.

By giving undivided attention.

By loving unconditionally.

By setting aside all the things we are told we should be doing and just being mom to our children.
